Libel case ceded after more than 25 years

Former Central Bank of Malta governor and Labour Party president Mario Vella has ceded a libel case he had filed against Daphne Caruana Galizia in 1999. On her assassination on 16 October 2017, the case was not withdrawn and was transferred to her heirs.

133 sittings have been scheduled since Vella filed the libel case on 2nd September 1999. Judgement has been repeatedly deferred since 3rd June 2009. On 9 October 2024, Vella decided to cede the case.

There will be no further proceedings on the matter.
